An engine-powered winch is a construction tool used for erecting overhead high-voltage transmission lines and laying underground cables. It enables smooth and convenient lifting and pulling operations—such as assembling steel towers and stringing conductors (and ground wires)—even under various complex conditions. Engine-powered winches are categorized into diesel-powered winches and gasoline-powered winches, and further divided into manual-portable and wheeled types.
Widely used in power and telecommunications line construction for erecting poles and towers, deploying cables mechanically, and tensioning wires, this equipment can also be employed for lifting and pulling heavy objects at sites such as construction sites and docks. It is particularly suitable for use in remote areas without access to electricity and offers exceptional flexibility in operation. Both laboratory tests and field trials have demonstrated its advantages, including a rational design, compact size, light weight, high efficiency, flexible operation, and ease of handling—making it highly popular among power and telecommunications workers.
Maintenance and Safe Operation of Winches:
To ensure the normal operation of the winch and extend its service life, it is essential to strengthen its maintenance and upkeep. Operators must have a thorough understanding of the entire mechanical system’s structure and performance, and must be proficient in its proper usage.
1. The allowable load on the drum is 3 tons: 3,000 kg at slow speed and 1,800 kg at fast speed; at 5 tons, the allowable load is 5,000 kg at slow speed and 2,500 kg at fast speed. Overloading is strictly prohibited.
2. The transmission gearbox must be kept filled with lubricating oil to one-quarter of its capacity.
3. To prevent gear-shifting malfunctions, a spring-loaded steel ball is installed inside the shift fork to serve as a locking mechanism for gear selection. Therefore, when using the device, be sure to check whether the spring-loaded steel ball is securely seated. If it’s not firmly in place, you must replace the spring before continuing to use the device.
4. The wear condition of the bakelite material in automatic brakes and interlocking brakes should be checked regularly. The clearance between the rotating gear of the automatic brake and its return mechanism should be 0.5 millimeters; if it exceeds 1 millimeter, the bakelite must be replaced immediately, otherwise the brake may fail, leading to an accident.
5. The automatic braking device is located inside the transmission gearbox. When lifting, the automatic brake gear emits a “tap, tap, tap” sound, indicating that the gear is functioning properly. When releasing the load, no such sound is heard.
6. Anchor method for the base: The bearing supports on both sides of the drum (which have two holes) serve as the anchoring points; other locations cannot be used as anchoring points.
7. The locking pins for the roller bearing housing must be matched with the corresponding holes; the use of other screws in place of the locking pins is strictly prohibited.
8. The housing of the gearbox is made of aluminum alloy. The screws on it should not be tightened excessively, and unnecessary disassembly and reassembly should be avoided. Moreover, never strike the housing with a hammer.
9. After being transported over long distances, this machine must undergo a detailed inspection to ensure that all component fastening screws are securely tightened and that the lubricating oil is in proper condition.
10. The prime mover—whether a gasoline engine or a diesel engine—can be operated in accordance with the equipment’s specified operating guidelines.
11. Before each use of the machine, check whether there is any debris on the machine body and whether there are any obstacles around that might interfere with the machine’s normal operation.
At the same time, all transmission mechanisms should be inspected. Use only after confirming that everything is functioning properly.
12. After each use, the machine should be promptly cleaned of dust, oil stains, and other dirt. All cleaning operations must be carried out only after the machine has been completely stopped.
